Amy Van Dyken received the Jesse Owens Olympic Spirit Award last week. The award recognizes "an individual who has served as a powerful force for good in society, inspiring others by contributing to a better world, uniting people or leading a cause."
In July, Van Dyken participated for the first time in the WheelWOD Games, a CrossFit-style competition that is known as the top-level event in adaptive fitness. She took second place.
Van Dyken, who won six Olympic gold medals in swimming, has been paralyzed from the waist down since 2014 when an ATV accident severed her spinal column. The latest edition of HBO's Real Sports catches up with her latest competitive exploits. Here's a snippet from the report, which premieres at 9 p.m. ET/PT Tuesday November 26.
