Ernie Els won the 2002 British Open by prevailing in a four-player playoff.
First there was a four-hole playoff, which eliminated Stuart Appleby and Steve Elkington. That left Els and Thomas Levet to face off in a sudden-death situation.
One hole decided it. Levet bogeyed it. Els made par with a five-foot putt to secure the title.
But what might have been even more memorable than the winning moment was Els' shot on the 13th hole of the final round. He found himself in a steep bunker with lots of sod, but not only escaped but left the ball just 18 inches from the hole. That helped him maintain his two-shot lead at the time.
