May 13, 1976: Julius Erving has 41 points, 19 rebounds and five assists to lead the New York Nets to the final ABA championship.
Erving's performance comes in Game 6 of the championship series against the Denver Nuggets. The Nets trail by 14 points heading into the fourth quarter but roar back to win 112-106 at the Nassau Coliseum. It's the second title in three seasons for the Nets.
In the series, Erving averages 37.7 points.
After this game, the ABA shuts down, and four of its teams -- the Nets, Nuggets, Pacers and Spurs -- are absorbed into the NBA for the 1976-77 season. The Nets, whose owner was under financial pressure, sells Dr. J to the 76ers.
