Dave Winfield was born October 3, 1951.
Winfield went to Minnesota on a baseball scholarship but also helped the Golden Gophers win a Big Ten title in basketball. Drafted by four teams in three sports, Winfield opted for baseball and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2001.
He played most of his career with the Padres and Yankees, and he helped New York reach the 1981 World Series before slumping in a six-game loss to the Dodgers.
Winfield won a World Series with the Blue Jays in 1992. His two-run double in the 11th inning of Game 6 was the series-winning hit.
In 22 MLB seasons, Winfield hit .283 with 465 home runs and 223 stolen bases. He won seven Gold Glove awards as an outfielder.
